Meet the Maker: Dawn McPherson, of Dawn’s Leather Treasures

IMG_20160227_101003201We met Dawn McPherson, of Dawn’s Leather Treasures,  at the Bay Area Renaissance Festival recently, where we were absolutely floored by her incredible artistry.  We’re super excited that she’s able to join us at this year’s Gulf Coast MakerCon event, and asked her to tell us more about her work.

GCMC: What do you make?

DM: I make surreal art out of new and recycled leather scraps. I have been working with leather for 25 years and I am amazed of it’s mold ability. It is my clay.

GCMC: Why do you make it?IMG_20160227_101601456

DM: I make it because it brings me joy to create something unique and different. I also enjoy sharing it with the world . It is my passion to work with leather in unusual ways.

GCMC: What do you enjoy best about your work?

DM: People are fascinated to see leather used in an unusual way, sometimes they think it is clay or plastic. My pieces are deeply moving to others and I enjoy the happiness it brings to them. My first priority is to make them happy and give them what they want.

IMG_20160227_101053003GCMC: Why do you think Gulf Coast MakerCon is important to our community?

DM: Gulf Coast MakerCon  gives people a chance to experience the what ifs in the world and get their mind working outside the box. The energy from the makers spreads to the observers and gives us all a chance to ponder.

GCMC:What do you hope to get out of the event?

DM: I hope to make new friends and come up with some new inspirations to work on. I hope to let people see the beauty of leather and the surreal art it can create.
