Undead Arts FX brings the dead to life at Gulf Coast Maker & Comic Con this year, with a Zombie Research Outpost! Ellie Willingham, the artist and prop maker behind Undead Arts FX, has been part of Gulf Coast Makers since the very beginning and it’s been fun watching her craft develop. She tells us more about her work here.
GCMCC: What do you make?
EW: I make props, costume accessories, and creepy fun convention exhibits! I am just a hobbyist with it, though some of my work has even been used in independent films and haunted house attractions.
GCMCC: Why do you make it/why is it important?
EW: I love to tell stories with my art in a way that visitors can become engaged in it. Though I am currently a full-time student at St. Petersburg College, creating this work has been a wonderful pastime that I can enjoy on the side and continue to share (or shall I say, scare) with others!
GCMCC: What inspires you?
EW: I have always been an artistic person, and intrigued by special effects and makeup techniques. A couple years ago I began working seasonally for Busch Gardens during Howl-O-Scream and I believe it is what really furthered my interest in the art of haunting! Many people enjoy being scared when they know it can’t actually harm them; it is a release, an adrenaline rush. While my own creations are quite a bit tamer than anything you’d see at a big haunted attraction, it is nonetheless an entertainingly spooky experience!
GCMCC: What are you bringing to showcase at Gulf Coast Maker & Comic Con?
EW: I am bringing the dead to life! Visitors will get to enjoy a mini haunted house setup in which they can brave the “Zombie Research Outpost” and meet, greet, and take pictures with the many members of the undead who will be wandering about the area. (Don’t worry, these zombies won’t bite – They are quite well trained, and are rewarded for their good behavior with fresh brains daily!)
GCMCC: Why do you believe Gulf Coast Maker & Comic Con is important?
EW: It is a great opportunity for people to share what they do and be who they are. There is always something for everyone at Gulf Coast Maker & Comic Con!
Let’s repeat that: Gulf Coast Maker & Comic Con “is a great opportunity for people to share what they do and be who they are.” That sums it up well, and we hope you’ll come out to see what others make, to share what you make, and to celebrate the best of being who we are as creative people!
