Cotton, linen, and ramie yarn can be washed in the washing machine on a gentle cycle using either cold or warm water. Acrylic and other synthetic yarns can be washed and dried with your regular laundry because they don’t shrink.
How can you wash yarn?
- Find pantyhose or nylon (knee or thigh high work best)
- Remove paper labels from yarn.
- Without unraveling, shove yarn into nylons (up to 4 skeins)
- Wash in washing machine in cold water on gentle/delicate or hand wash cycle (check yarn label to make sure you have the right temp and cycle)
Are you supposed to wash yarn?
Washing yarn isn’t something that most knitters have to deal regularly, but you might want to do it if you’ve recycled yarn from an old project or a thrift store sweater and want to straighten it out before you work with it.
Should I wash my yarn before crocheting?
It is still a usual practice for crocheters and knitters to buy recycled sweaters and reuse the yarn. It is hygienic to wash them first before turning recycled yarn into new crochet pieces.
How do you dry yarn quickly?
Yarn will dry quickly outside on a sunny day. If it is humid or rainy, drying yarn with a gentle fan in the area can help the yarn dry more quickly. When you lay out your yarn, you can fluff it a little with your fingers to help spread out the individual strands to dry. This should be done gently to avoid tangles.
What can I wash wool with?
Wool garments should be washed on the wool setting (usually gentle action at 40°C). If your washing machine does not have a wool cycle, use the cold water wash or wash cycle for delicates. Use a neutral, mild detergent that is preferably Woolmark recommended (look for the Woolmark symbol on the packet).
How do you wash silk yarn?
The easiest way is to put them in a mesh bag and launder in the washer on gentle cycle with COLD water. Then, shake the garment out and hang or lay to dry. The sheerer the silk, the more care you must take with it.
How do you clean second hand yarn?
Fill either a large container or your sink (wash the sink well before using!) with lukewarm water and add a small amount of wool wash or a delicate cleaner. Shampoo for colour treated hair also works but you’ll need to rinse the yarn after soaking.

What is a wool detergent?
Wool wash detergents are all mild and are suitable for washing wool in the washing machine and also for hand washing wool clothes, wool blankets and other wool items. Using a neutral, mild detergent, preferably one that is Woolmark recommended, should be your go-to when hand washing or machine washing wool clothing.
How do you dry cotton yarn?
Almost every cotton yarn can be machine washed on a gentle cycle and laid flat to dry. Some can even be tumble dried! Cotton is durable and generally won’t pill the way loosely plied wool yarns can.
